The Cadillac CTS has enjoyed a successful run since the 2003 model was first introduced in the U.S. in early 2002. Originally built as an executive car, this hard-working and stylish sedan has morphed over the years into a formidable rival in the midsize luxury sedan category, competing head to head with the likes of the BMW 5 Series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class. It's been a gradual ascent into these well-heeled ranks, but now that it's here, many agree that this is precisely where this vehicle belongs.
Where It All Started
The first generation of the Cadillac CTS was introduced with a rear-wheel drivetrain and was available in two engines, both with either an automatic or 5-speed manual transmission. The 5-speed was eventually dropped for a 6-speed manual transmission, and in 2004, the CTS-V hit the streets with a 5.7 liter, V8 engine rated at 400 hp, a jump from the two original V6 engines that initially graced this car.
The second generation upped the ante with three available engine configurations paired with either a 6-speed manual or an automatic transmission. An all-wheel-drive variant entered the mix, and the overall size of the vehicle increased slightly over its predecessor, although not enough to make it entirely believable as a midsize luxury vehicle. More body styles were also offered at this point, giving consumers a coupe and a wagon to choose from as well as the original sedan body style.
Here and Now
The current generation of Cadillac CTS hearkens back to its roots, doing away with the wagon and coupe models and sticking with the classic sedan. Two new engines have joined the lineup, including a 2.0-liter turbo-four and a twin-turbocharged 3.6-liter V6. The physical size of the car has also increased again, putting the Cadillac CTS squarely in line now with the Lexus GS and BMW 5 Series at the top of the pack.
Strength and Beauty Rolled Up into One
Today's Cadillac CTS is a beautiful, confident contender in the midsize luxury automobile class. Precise steering and agile handling make it fun to drive -- not surprising, coming from the folks who brought us the Corvette. The base engine provides decent power for most people, but those who are power-hungry will want to upgrade to one of the V6 options.
The body styling on the Cadillac CTS whispers of luxury and elegance. Vertical running lights reminiscent of a string of diamonds grace the front end of this classy lady. Interior accoutrements include leather seats and a choice of carbon fiber or wood interior accents. A heated and ventilated driver's seat is also available, as is keyless entry and push-button start. All the technological advances are here, too: Bluetooth®, a built-in Wi-Fi hotspot, Sirius XM satellite radio®, and a Bose premium audio system.
The Cadillac CTS is one elegant car, and it does the midsize luxury car category justice. If you're looking for a high-performance vehicle that's fun to drive and as luxurious as it gets, test drive a Cadillac CTS today. You'll fall in love.
